REAL ACTION ON TRANSPORT FOR MACQUARIE
10-August-2010
The Liberals will provide over $1.5 million to take real action on local roads in the Blue Mountains and the Hawkesbury if elected as a Coalition Government.
Louise Markus MP, Liberal Candidate for Macquarie, together with the Shadow Treasurer, the Hon Joe Hockey MP, announced the funding during his visit to the Macquarie electorate today.
“A Coalition Government will provide $715,000 to rehabilitate failed sections of Terrace Road in North Richmond, from Kurmond Road to Gormley Street and a further $520,000 will be allocated to reconstruct a section of Freemans Reach Road in Wilberforce,” Mrs Markus announced.
“These are major thoroughfares for residents of the Hawkesbury and visitors to our area and this funding will make it safer for the thousands of local residents who travel on these roads daily.
“A Coalition Government will provide an additional $350,000 to seal Jennings Road in Faulconbridge, funding that is aimed at reducing hooning and dangerous driving in the area.
Mrs Markus has also committed to fighting for a national freight to rail plan, in order to make our local roads even safer.
“Our region needs a plan for the future for adequate road and rail infrastructure. We need to be thinking about the long term consequences of the increasing amount of freight on our roads. We need to be thinking about what we can do to make our roads safer for all those who travel on them daily to get to work, take their children to school, and to drive to the shops.
“Adequate and safe roads are also vital to the movement of tourists and visitors to our region.
“I have consulted several of the roads groups in Macquarie, as well as local Councils, and it is clear that what is needed is a national freight to rail plan.
“An integrated rail and roads system is essential for keeping our roads safe and maintaining our lifestyle. It is what we need, and I will fight for it,” Mrs Markus stated.
“The Liberals will end the talk about transport infrastructure and deliver the real action our community needs for the future.”
