MARKUS CONGRATULATES LAPSTONE AFTER-SCHOOL CENTRE ON SPORTS AWARD

02-December-2010

Lapstone Out of School Hours Care Service has been recognised for its excellence in delivering fun, safe and inclusive sports activities to children through the Australian Sports Commission’s Active After-school Communities (AASC) program.
The after-school care service won the regional award for the Penrith/blue Mountains in the AASC’s 2010 NSW Super Site Award.

Louise Markus MP, Federal Member for Macquarie, attended the Lapstone OOSH on Tuesday 30 November to both recognise and acknowledge the efforts of those running the program and the children participating by presenting Certificates of Participation to all students.

“It should be remembered that Tony Abbott when Federal Health Minister was responsible for getting the after school sports program up and running. The great thing about programs such as these is that they are ensuring children get plenty of physical activity,” said Louise Markus.

“We’re really proud of the difference the AASC program is making. The program increases our ability to provide a wider range of outdoor activities to encourage children to be more active outdoors. It’s fun and non-competitive, and has also encouraged children not normally interested in playing sport to join in and in turn develop healthier habits,” said Lapstone OOSH Care Service director Anita Watson.

“It’s great to be recognised for our success in delivering the program, but the biggest reward is watching the children have a go at different activities, working with other children and developing their skills and self confidence,” added Anita Watson.

The AASC program identifies children in their formative years and looks to establish healthy habits that will remain with them throughout their lives. The program is locally focused, so participating sites can tailor programs to meet the needs of the children and their families.

“Anita and her team are doing a brilliant job in balancing the needs of the children and I would strongly recommend all parents continue to support this very positive based community program,” said Louise Markus.
