LOUISE MARKUS ATTENDS PROCLAMATION OF MACQUARIE'S FIVE TOWNS

02-December-2010

Castlereagh Uniting Church was the venue for the 200th anniversary service of the Macquarie Towns on Sunday 28 November with the Governor of New South Wales, Professor Marie Bashir offering the Welcome to Country address in recognition of the first inland visit of Governor Lachlan Macquarie.

The official guest list included Louise Markus MP, Federal Member for Macquarie, and Hawkesbury Mayor Bart Bassett representing the Hawkesbury region, and during proceedings it was highlighted that Governor Macquarie's influence on establishing the ‘five towns’ was critical to the survival of the Sydney colony.

“I am honoured to be the Federal Member for Macquarie to commemorate the important role the Hawkesbury region played in establishing the foundations of our current society,” said Louise Markus.

Governor Macquarie's brief to protect the colony's food supply from potential flooding was to establish five towns on the Hawkesbury River: Richmond, Windsor, Castlereagh, Wilberforce and Pitt Town.

Two hundred years later, the towns continue to reflect Macquarie's town planning ability, his willingness to spend public money on infrastructure, and the lasting legacy of a successful agriculture industry.

“The message from Governor Macquarie 200 years ago still holds true today. The Hawkesbury region is a rich source of opportunity and continues to make a substantial contribution to both New South Wales and Australia, even though the region is still threatened by major flooding. I am continuing to work with the community on a flood mitigation solution,” added Louise Markus.
