OARS FOR A CAUSE

Louise Markus MP, Federal Member for Macquarie, this week met with Jan Caldwell and Gillian Brown from the Blackheath based Pendragons Abreast charity group to raise awareness of the organisation.

“Encouraging the early detection and raising the awareness of breast cancer while having fun is a fantastic concept and I am very supportive of what Jan and Gillian are trying to accomplish,” Mrs Markus said.

Pendragons Abreast are members of Dragons Abreast Australia a national charity that has 43 clubs nationally and in excess of 2000 members. The aim of Dragon Boat racing is to have fun, create a team environment and also cater for people with disabilities offering them a social network that is essential when a life changing experience occurs.

“We are passionate about helping breast cancer survivors manage the impact of their illness in a positive, fun way,” Jan Caldwell, Chairperson of Pendragon Abreast, said.

“We are hoping to attract lots of new members and also purchase our own dragon boat, paddles and uniforms so that we can continue to provide opportunities for breast cancer survivors and also new members,” Gillian Brown added.

Dragon Boat racing has proven to be a saviour for many breast cancer survivors, providing a goal to strive towards while also offering an outlet to have fun, improve health and personal well being.

Breast cancer survivors can help themselves and Pendragon Abreast by contacting Jan Caldwell (0428 242 667) or Gillian Brown (0413 151 467), both of whom are breast cancer survivors, for more details.

“Jan and Gillian are very passionate about helping breast cancer survivors and I am happy to support their efforts,” Mrs Markus said.
