17-November-2011

Federal Member for Macquarie, Louise Markus MP, has encouraged people of the Hawkesbury to nominate a colleague, friend, acquaintance or family member for the 2012 University of Western Sydney Women of the West Award.

“The Women of the West Award is a great initiative by UWS to formally recognise the contribution women have made to the development of the Greater Western Sydney region,” said Louise Markus.

“Women have made an invaluable contribution to the Hawkesbury in a number of ways, whether that be through business, health services, community services, education, environmental groups, volunteering or even through their attitude.

“This award is public recognition of the remarkable achievements of the women of the West.”

In its eighth year, the Award continues to grow to showcase the diversity and strength of women in the region. Past winners include Dr Helen Somerville (2011), Aunty Mae Robinson and Sister Kerry McDermott (2010), Jan Nicoll (2009) and Helen Walker OAM (2008), to name a few, all recognised for their varying work in the region.

“I encourage everyone to nominate an extraordinary woman from their profession, community or network for this Award,” said Mrs Markus.

Nominees must:
·         Live and/or work in Greater Western Sydney;
·         Demonstrate leadership; and
·         Contribute to improving the lives of people in Greater Western Sydney.

In recognition of the amazing work of youth in the community, the Young Women of the West Award is also open for nominations, for which, nominees must be aged 18-28 years.
